New Imaging Spectroscopy Facility at UWA

The University of Western Australia’s Physics Department boasts a new imaging and spectroscopy facility that has the potential to transform crude oil production and refinery processes.

Cutting edge technology is a priority for oil and gas companies who face an increasingly competitive market and are looking for an edge that makes them stand out against the rest.

At UWA our scientists are working with new technologies that will revolutionise the industry and add value to a company’s bottom line through improved productivity.

One such technology is a state-of-the-art terahertz (THz) imaging and spectroscopy system, the TeraPulse 4000, that has just been installed in the School of Physics and is the first of its kind in WA.

UWA’s Associate Professor Vincent Wallace is the co-inventor on several patents relating to THz technologies and he expands on why this technology is a novel tool for industry:

“For the oil and gas, and resources industry, THz spectroscopy provides the capability to understand numerous problems like water content and crude oil viscosity.”

"THz spectroscopy is ideally suited for probing intermolecular interactions and low-energy vibrational, rotational and librational modes of various components of crude oil and the aggregation of certain compounds like asphaltenes."

“Asphaltenes are heavy, polar aromatic molecules found in crude oils that due to aggregation increases its viscosity and thus make it more difficult to extract. Typically, solvents like toluene or benzene are used to dissolve these compounds but there is a lack of understanding as to why they form in the first place.”

 “It is this type of problem that I am looking to engage with industry and solve, using this cutting edge technology. By understanding why asphatelenes form, it will provide us the key to removing them prior to or during extraction and potentially transforming production quality.”

TeraView at IRMMW-THz 2015

"Since 2000, the IRMMW-THz conference series has alternated between Asia, Europe and America on a continuous three year cycle. In 2015, the conference returns to the Asian leg, and will be held in Hong Kong for the first time from August 23 to 28 at the Chinese University of Hong Kong."


TeraView's CEO, Dr. Don Arnone will be in attendance for the event and will be one of the plenary speakers.


TeraView's Dr. Philip Taday will also be attending the event, and will be demonstrating TeraView's flagship instrument, the TeraPulse 4000 in our booth over.

TeraPulse 4000 – TeraView ships and delivers its first unit

TeraView is pleased to announce that following launch the TeraPulse 4000 in February 2015, it has successfully installed a system at a world-leading research institute in France after winning a completive tender.


The system was provided to the Laboratoire Ondes et Matière d'Aquitaine (LOMA), a joined research unit of the University of Bordeaux and CNRS (Le Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique). Professor Patrick Mounaix (patrick.mounaix@u-bordeaux.fr), who is the director of research at the Laboratoire IMS- UMR 5218 CNRS - Groupe Nano - Equipe Laser, Université Bordeaux, Bat A31, has a long and distinguished track record in terahertz-related research, and will utilize the system for postal inspection in the framework of InPoSec (www.inposec.eu) joint project funded by ANR (Agence Nationale de la Recherche) and BMBF(Federal Ministry of Education and Research). The TeraPulse was supplied with external fibres to provide a flexible configuration for different experimental set ups.

TeraPulse - The Next Generation Terahertz Spectrometer and Imaging System from TeraView

TeraView is pleased to announce the launch of its new Terahertz system, the TeraPulse 4000!


Building on the success of the TPS Spectra 3000 which has become the industry standard in Terahertz instrumentation, the TeraPulse 4000 offers the same industry leading performance and reliability, all within a single, compact unit. Smaller, lighter and more portable, the TeraPulse is equally at home in a laboratory or industrial environment.

The system is available with an on-board spectroscopy/imaging compartment (as shown above) or with fibres. The fibre based system can then accept various ’plug and play’ sample modules, enabling a range of different Terahertz applications that have been developed by TeraView over the last decade. Both configurations are fully compatible with TeraView’s existing and extensive range of “plug and play” modules, which allow users to quickly and economically expand their Terahertz capabilities.

The system is also supplied with a new software suite which fully integrates the improved spectroscopic and imaging capabilities of the unit into one common platform.
